Play With Me by Chloe Lattanzi
Oh. My.
Just a warning, this clip is not safe for.. well, life really. If you’d like to keep enjoying yours, and if you like decent music, don’t watch this. But then again, you have to watch to enjoy my review so… do it.
The first thing that comes to mind is that this song sounds like someone gave the twins from The Shining a record deal and turned their “come play with us” catch phrase into an incredibly mediocre electro song.
There are two major issues I have with this song and this video.
1) I’ve probably mentioned before but I don’t like any director or artist in any medium that uses violence, nudity or gore purely just to shock the audience. Granted, the way I found this clip was through news outlets, in that it made headlines because of how disturbing it was. And when I finally watched it my main reaction was ‘meh.’ M-E-H meh. The main hype I’m sure is because this chick is Olivia Newton-John’s daughter and if a newspaper can spew out a few lines about an Australian Icon’s offspring doing something “wrong” then they will definitely try to make a sensation out of it. But I’ve seen worse, right? So if it’s not shocking me, then what’s the point? What it should be doing is have something - anything - to do with the story line. And ok, it does a little bit here. I get it, abusive guy who doesn’t pay attention to you, so you harm yourself to get some attention but that brings me to my second beef…
2) WHAT KIND OF A LESSON IS THAT?? Oh man, my boyfriend is so wound up in the paper when he takes a dump that he doesn’t notice I’m taking a bath with a toaster and have 3rd degree burns. Wow. Really? Ok, I’m all for the argument that not every young girl in the media spotlight has to be a role model but this clip is either saying A. if a man doesn’t pay you attention, harm yourself until he does or B. this is actually how Chloe Lattanzi acts in real life - neither of which are good. And her whinging over and over again “notice me, notice me” - I can understand why he doesn’t, you annoying idiot. I mean, when I posted about Rihanna and said “don’t do what she does” I meant it - but at least she was taking charge and standing up for herself. This video is just preaching that it’s ok to let an abusive man ruin your life, and if he does, suicide is totally a viable option.
By the 3 minute mark I was really hoping she’d just get it over with already and that dreadful song would finally end. So I can understand why the dude keeps checking to see if she’s dead and is disappointed when she’s not.
