Warpaint by Warpaint

Not revolutionary, but Warpaint’s new music video sure is pretty.

I love underwater imagery. The sense of floaty, flowing, continuous movement that only comes with being underwater (or even in space). Combining that with a beautiful use of colour and the whole video is a treat for not only the eyes but also the body. Being able to feel something (other than emotionally) via a music video is not something that happens often.

Do you ever watch cooking shows and swear that you can smell the food they are cooking? Well, you kind of can. You’re brain understands what you are seeing and know what you should be smelling and you end up thinking you can actually smell it. I get a similar sensation from this clip. I’m obviously not the one diving into a brightly coloured pond but the movement is so beautiful I can almost feel the gentle flows of the water keeping me bouyant. The way one of the girls eyelashes float at 1:30 almost seem ethereal and out of this world.

Beyond the brilliant underwater cinematography, the use of colour truly adds to the experience, giving your eyes something to feast on and more so, giving every viewer a feeling they can relate to. Yes, the world is grey and boring. Other worlds are always going to be more exciting, more vibrant!

My only tiny beef with the clip would be the somewhat amateur acting from the band (and that the parking cop’s story, reaching down into the drain reminds me wat too much of IT!) but it’s nothing to dampen my enjoyment of the video. Plus, it ends beautifully with the girls coming back to the surface, where everything is coloured. Not as brightly as it was underwater but at least we can take some of that magic with us when returning to the real world.
