California Gurls by Katy Perry
A very very cute idea. A giant game of Candyland come to life? Oh, Ms Perry, what an adorable vision! And total props for getting Snoop Dogg in that suit. I mean, I bet he had no issues being lord of the gummi bears but that suit is quite hideous. Not surprisingly, boys can’t pull off being dressed in candy the way girls can. Candlyland incarnate seems like a mean place to live though. Thousands of cute girls stuck in jelly and suffocating in cellophane wrappers. And then the gummi bears flip you off? How rude! Still, how do I get there? It’s like Willy Wonka’s factory except with hot girls instead of oompa loompas and minus the fat kids who’ll eat all my chocolate.
This video has grown on me the same way the song did. On first viewing, I don’t quite understand why this isn’t set in (wait for it) California. On the beach with hot girls in few clothes and a lot of gratuitous boob shots. Ok, so everything after the word “beach” is in there, but still, I just don’t feel like the whole Candyland setting fits in with the tune. But, after a few more watchings and listenings, I’ve grown to quite like the song. And by like, I of course mean I won’t ever choose to listen to it but will grab my friends and run to the dance floor when it comes on in a club at 2am.
Speaking of boobs; I really wish mine had the ability to defeat an army of gummi bears by spraying them with whipped cream. Afterwards, I’d probably eat the gummy bears and that’s why I don’t fit into size 2 hot pants and could never pull off the gummi bear overthrow with the same sexiness that Katy does but that’s my cross to bear (geddit?!). I’m not so sure about the cupcake bra or if it’s doing anyone the same favours that the whipped cream is but it really does sum up what I love most about this video and Katy Perry herself.
She’s staying true. And obviously not in the “I am an artiste and will stay true to my morals no matter if I make it or not” way. I’m almost certain Katy abandoned that the day someone said to her “hey, your first single will be the one about making out with a chick cos being a lesbian is so in right now.” but she’s stayed true to herself in that she’ll do what she wants and not give a damn, And not in the Lady-Gaga-shoving-her-“visions”-down-our-throats, “women will like what I tell them to like” way, but Katy is simply a little bit kooky, a little bit strange at times. But it’s not a character, it’s her and it’s fun.
