Last Friday Night (TGIF) by Katy Perry

Ok, if you haven’t actually watched this yet do so now before reading because it’s so much more fun as it comes along.

Glee kids, Rebecca Black, Kenny G, Corey Feldman! What more could you want??

OK, so you could argue the inclusion of Rebecca Black and the Glee kids is just because they’re “in” right now (I was going to say “cool” and then wasn’t sure if that applied to Rebecca) but this whole video - hell, Katy Perry’s whole persona - it’s just incredible kitschy fun that it doesn’t matter what’s in or not, this surprisingly all works so well together.

Rebecca Black actually does a fairly decent job of acting and not looking like she’s starstruck to be in that position. The two Glee kids, Darren Cris and Kevin McHale also do a fantastic job as Kathy Beth’s suitor and… whoever Darren Cris is meant to be.

Oh! And Hanson! God damn Hanson, man! (Who, I actually have a post about coming up shortly). But seriously, Hanson!

I think that’s the only part that confuses me about this whole thing. When is it meant to be set? And slash or: Who is it aimed at? Rebecca Black fans would be the pre-tween market, Glee fans span all ages, you’d have to be at least 20 by now to remember Hanson in their heyday, and most people under the age of 30 wouldn’t have seen a Corey Feldman film, let alone appreciate the joke about “Uncle Kenny” not playing the sax again. Hell, I’m young enough to not know who Debbie Gibson is. Katy’s dressing like she’s in the 80’s but then not everyone else is. And she’s playing Just Dance.

Whatever, I don’t even care. This is so much fun to watch and sing along to and - I’ve said it before but here I go again - Katy Perry is awesome because she doesn’t take herself too seriously. She knows she’s not changing the world. She knows most of her songs are trash. But they’re trashy fun and they will at the very least, make you grin and go “Omg it’s Hanson!”
