Drunk Girls by LCD Soundsystem

Oh Spike Jonze. How I love you. And how I love LCD Soundsystem for hiring a hugely well known director to direct a clip that has so little direction.

The moment in this video where it hits you that those people singing probably weren’t told what to expect is great. Like “Hi! Thanks for coming to the shoot! No no, you don’t need anything, just put your stuff over here… never mind the pandas. Ok, so we’re going to roll, just one thing; no matter what happens, just keep singing ok? I promise this will make you famous.”

One camera, one shot, a lot of destruction. I’m almost certain that this video is less a crafted, planned piece of art and more just a visual manifestation of the combined acid trips of Spike Jonze and James Murphy. They can probably see the pandas. I mean, I’ve never done acid but I’ve heard you see some pretty terrifying things and I’m certain that this is what Frank would look like if he were a panda instead of a bunny. And I think that, while it’s awesome fun, I would actually need to be on acid to not get bored after 4 minutes of essentially, one gag.

But I’ll still watch it the whole way through - the video is hugely amusing because really, nothing is funnier than people getting hurt. It’s why Funniest Home Videos is still on air.

A small part of me is sad that the same genius that directed Buddy Holly and Weapon of Choice so skillfully has let his latest video be such a crazy mess, but when you have proven your skill, it’s only fair to be allowed a little fun in your repertoire as well.
