Tightrope by Janelle Monae
This chick is just the epitome of cool. And not a bullshit 2010 hipster cool, but a real, I-don’t-care-what-you-think-I-am-awesome-without-even-trying-and-I-don’t-gloat-about-it way. (wow allie, that was elloquent).
This clip and particularly the choreography reminds me of that scene in The Blues Brothers. And now I want to watch the Blues Brothers.
It’s nice to see a music video with an actual storyline these days (unlike my other option for his post MGMT’s Flash Delirium. Seriously watch it, I have no idea what to even say about that). And I think the story ties in so well with the clip and the song.
It does get slightly tedious as even though I love the idea of the insane asylum setting and I adore the costuming, the whole colour palate is quite bland and doesn’t hold my attention for the full 5 minutes. Repetitive dancing (no matter how cool it is) is going to do that too.
I’ve seen quite a few clips lately that are amazing but just can’t stretch that extra bit to fill out the time with something new and while Tightrope falls into that category for me, it’s still one that I’ve enjoyed.
