Underdog by You Me At Six

I really, really wanted to like this clip. Which is not to say that I don’t, I guess. It just could have been so much more - you know?

I very much enjoy the editing and the pace of the clip. I love all the shots of the band and think that specific set design, even though it’s just a band in a space works really well (except for those Orange amp stacks. My personal beef but even in that colour scheme those things are such a violent hue - I don’t ever feel like they fit in anywhere).

The part of this video that’s lacking is the story they’re trying to tell. It’s a good premise: boy cheats on girl, girl is sad, girl finds some balls, both boy and “other woman” get their comeuppance (oh, did I say good premise? I meant good in the “appeals to the lowest common denominator” sort of way) but it just doesn’t go deep enough. The whole story is completely superficial. We apparently don’t even need to know why that guys is kissing another chick, he’s clearly wronged the (cuter, punkier) girl and that’s all we should care about in this situation. Like, dude, you had a cool, slightly alternate chick (she has rips in her tights, yo) - WHYYY would you trade that for a *gasp* blonde? Seriously, I thought you were scene.

It kind of reminds me of the video for I’ll Run by The Cab - in which we get the storyline in the first 5 seconds but we just keep getting dragged back to the same sequences that don’t explain anything further and don’t develop character or relationships. And ok, I know it’s going to be difficult to build anything like that inside of 3 minutes but that’s just it - the clip is only 2 minutes 30 and they’re still struggling to fill the time with something new.

Also, are the couple in a deserted movie theatre corridor? I can’t seem to tell where that’s meant to be.

I was so hoping for redemption when the brunette girl started dancing but alas. Considering it’s only during the bridge and doesn’t add to the story at all, I really needed to see some leaps or spins or freaky flexibility, just so this song could have at least one ‘wow’ point - and that just wasn’t there.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t dislike this clip. I like this band, I like these boys and I like the song - but I was so hoping with all my heart for something more from this video.
