F*ck You be Cee Lo Green
(NSFW - F-bombs)
Fun fact! This song was written and produced by Bruno Mars! Yep, apparently he’ll only personally sing the songs about killing himself for the perfect lady. He’ll leave the heart break songs for the heavyweights. Not that I’m complaining mind you, I very much doubt this song would have the impact it does had sweet voiced, mild tempered Bruno sung it.
Nominated for Song of the Year, F*ck You (also known as Forget You when Gwyneth Paltrow sings it and FU in some other circles… just for fun) is simply the ultimate burn song. I mean, you could boil it all down to one big life lesson your mother taught you; “dont judge a book by it’s over…” “a bird in the hand is worth two in the blah blah…” but really, it’s for everyone who’s been rejected, or looked down upon or made to feel unwanted… so, it’s for everyone. And it’s so damn catchy and upbeat. It almost makes me want someone to break my heart in the summer so I can dance around in a bikini on the beach or in my backyard, singing f*ck you to passersby.
The brilliance of the actual video comes from a) a great use of colour and b) the fun use of text and graphics to tell the story. Hey Cee Lo, how did you get to where you are today? Oh by swirling around in french fries, a violin and a music theory notebook? AWESOME! (You’re missing the point allie, he ignored the people laughing at him and made it to the top).
The gorgeous purple neon lighting in the current day Cee Lo scenes adds to the ethereal sense that he is watching himself, his life play out in front of him again, and delivers the “f*ck you’s” with that smug sense of satisfaction knowing that whatever his heartbreaker did is ok, because he knows how it turns out.
My only disappointment is that while I ADORE the Supreme’s style back up singers, I was itching to see them (or even Cee Lo) bust out some more moves. It’s probably the reason why I don’t mind watching the soulless Glee version because at least they’re all up and dancing. I can’t help it but have bit of a shimmy and a shake (or whatever the kids are calling it these days) as soon the first bars of this song start.
