Firework by Katy Perry
Who’d have thought a Katy Perry video would be that much of a tear-jerker? I’ll admit it, even after several views and I’m still getting a lump caught in my throat. Really Katy, why are you doing this to me? Cancer kids and gay teens and low self esteem and domestic abuse? Low blow KP, low blow.
But really, what a beautifully shot clip. Not exactly sure why they had to fly to Budapest to do it but it does give the atmosphere of the video an air of royalty or prestige. Katy does a great job of selling that emotion in her face too - which only drags us further in emotionally.
And truly, I can’t fault the plot because - as clichéd as it is - we can all relate to one of those story lines (whether we’d like to admit it or not); because if it’s not a specific character we can relate to, just the human elemental desire to be stronger, different, accepted etc.
Really, the only thing ruining this clip for me (aside from the terrible, terrible lyrics) are the actual fireworks. Surely someone would have realised that was going to draw comparisons to Katy shooting whipped cream out of her breasts. I can ignore most of the occasions it happens but the fireworks bursting out of the pregnant woman’s stomach is just going a bit too far. To me it makes them look like malfunctioning robots.
This video is being used in conjunction with the It Gets Better - a great cause to support if ever there was one.
