Sunday Best by Washington

This one is just too cute. I find Megan Washington an adorable mix girlishness while at the same time challenging gender roles in a not-so-abrupt La Roux way.

There’s just so much to love about this clip. Aside from the plain fact that the tune is fun and catchy, there so many cute little throwbacks to a thousand and one cultural references that makes watching the video that much more enjoyable (plus, you totally feel smug smart) - like Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck on their 1950’s green screen Vespa romp.

The whole clip is a well played out story and I adore the comical elements and wanted more! The patrons of the restaurant are a perfect characiture and the subtitles, sound effects and black and white (plus the fake bleeping out of the swears) adds an element of whimsy that we don’t often see in music videos these days - but it’s good to know Washington remembers how to have fun.

Now for my girly paragraph: wow, those costumes! The two dresses at the end that make us want to join a burlesque dance squad. Gorgeous and so fitting the tone of the clip. And the group dance scenes! Say what you will but there’s a reason Glee and So You think You Can Dance are so popular. Somehow, the last few years have seen a resurgence of musical theatre and the fact that charting artists are embracing that and having some fun with it makes the world a happier place.

Oddly enough, the shooting at the end reminds me of Sid Vicious doing My Way which - if intentional - is a strange reference to include in an otherwise upbeat and fun clip (I always found the Sid Vicious video quite morbid), but never the less, even if it was intentional, how can I not love someone who references the Sex Pistols?

Megan Washington is a fantastic performer on stage and it’s so great that she can translate that to film while still being herself.
